On 21st March, 1987, Professor Graham Smith, of the University of Leicester, Editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, addressed the Anaesthetic Section on Post Operative Pain Management. He discussed the inadequacies of the traditional intermittent intramuscular injections of opiates, highlighting the pharmacological reasons for this. He discussed newer techniques including continuous I.V. opiates and patient controlled administration of analgesics. He also discussed the recent transdermal administration as a new and exciting prospect.
