A meeting of the Surgical Section of the Royal Academy of Medicine took place in the Royal College of Surgeons on Friday 6th November 1987. The chair was taken by the President Mr. David Lane. The President opened the meeting by asking Professor W. McGowan to speak about the forthcoming meeting to Bahrain to which the Surgical Section of the Academy had been invited by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Professor McGowan explained that a meeting was to take place between the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland together with the Ministry of Health of the State of Bahrain from Saturday 12th March to Saturday 19th March. He invited the Surgical Section of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland to attend this meeting and outlined an attractive programme.
After this the main business of the meeting got underway with the presentation of four papers:
“Stromal influences on breast cancer growth and development” was presented by Mr. Kieran Horgan.
“Blunt oesophagectomy with colonic replacement ” was presented by Mr. Gerry O’Sullivan.
“Preliminary experience with synchronous per-operative transluminal angioplasty and vascular reconstruction” was presented by Mr. P. O’Byrne.
“Chemoprevention in experimental colon cancer” was presented by Mr. P. O’Dwyer
All four papers provided a varied clinical and scientific programme and each paper stimulated considerable interest and discussion. On behalf of the Surgical Section Mr. Lane closed the meeting by thanking the presenters for their excellent papers and the meeting duly brought to an end.
